You’ve probably heard the phrase cost efficiency more times than you can count lately. We’re all focused on it, and we all know it matters. But if we stop at cost-cutting, we miss the bigger picture. Posted in: TexasMonument Houston’s Elevated Safety Standards Earn Regional Award — Again!
July 21st, 2023

In just a few words, “delivering every tank car safely” perfectly summarizes the mission of Monument Houston’s rail team. While that may seem simple enough, the efforts behind making this possible are anything but. And if anyone understands that, it’s the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). So when they recognize a chemical company in this area, it’s a big deal.
And this year, Monument Chemical took that achievement to the next level. We are proud to be one of less than 100 companies across the region to earn the 2022 Union Pacific Pinnacle Award, and it wasn’t the first time we’ve made the prestigious list. But it was under some of the most impressive circumstances yet!

Posted in: TexasMonument Teams Take a Step Back to Make Major Progress in Inventory & Expense Control
May 9th, 2023

Our sites are fast-paced. Our work is deadline-driven. The momentum is always moving us forward to the next task and the next deliverable. So it’s not always easy to stop and take a step back — especially when it may mean switching gears and embracing new ways to work. But in a challenging economic climate with so much uncertainty clouding the near future, that pause is exactly the type of proactive move we need.
That was the mentality our teams across Monument sites embraced when low inventory and a soft market raised some red flags in our current spending and operations. It was time to slow down and make some tough decisions — but the efforts and challenges would all be worth it.
Monument Bayport Team Awarded EcoVadis Bronze Status – Our Sustainability and ESG Journey Gains Momentum

Houston Team’s Quick Emergency Response Spotlights Impact of Year-Round Efforts
April 12th, 2023

Everyone at Monument knows we live and breathe safety. We talk about it daily. We do training regularly. We look for ways to improve continuously. And every now and then, we're reminded exactly why we focus on safety as much as we do. It’s also in those moments that we realize the only thing as important as emergency prevention — is our response to it.
And that certainly proved true this past March for our Houston team, when a fire ignited on site due to static build up during a routine flushing procedure. While the task was something the team has successfully performed time and time again, the turn of events required them to demonstrate a very different set of skills — and they truly made it count.

March 24th, 2023

A contaminated product can cost any manufacturer — big time. Not only could it require extensive measures to try and salvage the material, but there’s also no guarantee how much you actually will salvage when all the work is said and done. And due to the unplanned nature of these issues, it can be just as inconvenient and costly to the chemical company helping them reprocess it all.
This all could have been the case for our client, Total Energies, when one of their rail cars, containing over 180,000 pounds of industrial solvent (Methylcyclohexane, or MCH), was contaminated with an unknown substance. But when they came to Monument with hopes of recovering as much as they could through a lengthy distillation at Bayport, our team came up with a much better idea — one that not only saved time and money, but also recovered 98% of their material. But it sure wasn’t easy.

Over the last 10 years, Monument’s Intern and Co-Op programs have produced several incredible success stories for young, aspiring environmental scientists and engineers. But the most notable benefits of these programs aren’t mutually exclusive to the program participants. The talent and work ethic from the members within each of the programs have been impactful to our businesses and functions, often teaching us as much as we teach them! Posted in: TexasTwo New Distillation Columns Create Countless Growth Possibilities for Houston
July 20th, 2022

Growth has been a common trend for the Monument Houston team since the site opened its doors in 2008. And with the addition of an increasingly expanding custom manufacturing portfolio, that growth prompted some big decisions and major additions Because while our pipeline increased, our distillation capacity wasn’t increasing with it. So the team decided it was time to stop racking our brains on how to maximize the space we had — and make a lot more of it!

With over 45 schools in the Clear Creek Independent School District, there’s a lot of potential future engineers and scientists coming through the ranks every year. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for most of these students or their teachers to think these are the only two paths our industry has to offer. Lucky for them, Monument’s partnership with Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) and Clear Creek ISD (CCISD) is on a mission to change that — and a whole lot more.

When you’re handling a product where the tiniest quality flaw can derail the entire production process, attention to detail matters — big time. And in the case of the Bayport site’s recent campaign producing the molasses-like polymer used in makeup products, the team could have easily found themselves in a sticky situation. Instead, they delivered in a major way, not only hitting deadlines, but coming in way ahead of schedule and reducing production costs in the process.

May 20th, 2022

While the annual audit for ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification is a known and scheduled event at Monument, its importance to our company and sites cannot be overstated. This globally recognized certification is the seal of approval we rely on to ensure our customers have added assurance to know they can, in turn, rely on us. And it’s a status we can’t afford to take for granted.
With that in mind, we want to recognize and thank Bonnie Heffernan, Quality Manager, and Lauren Hamilton, Quality Engineer, for overseeing the audit in Brandenburg, where we were recently recommended for continued certification of the site under the ISO 9002:2015 standard.

Posted in: TexasA Message from Amy (June 1)
June 1st, 2020
As I watched the news this weekend, I found myself heartbroken for my hometown of Indianapolis, and for our country. I’m sure many of you find yourselves in the same position. My heart is with all those who are living in fear, whose hearts are heavy given recent events, and those who will spend the coming weeks and months rebuilding from the damage caused by the riots.
Since my family started this company 90 years ago, we have built a culture that believes in the value of every person. We all come from different backgrounds and upbringings, many from different races, religions, political beliefs, identities, and ethnicities. It is precisely these differences, and the unique contributions that each individual can bring, that fuel our spirit of innovation. We have built our business betting on people, and doing the right thing. . .and we will continue to do so because time and again we see that people work better together.
Another core priority within our culture is and has always been safety. It is foundational in everything we do at THG, and I strongly believe that safety includes both psychological as well as physical safety. Each and every one of us should feel safe, respected, and embraced by our Heritage culture, throughout every part of our organization.
From the bottom of my heart, know that you are a valued member of the Heritage family. We will continue to build upon a culture that encourages, celebrates, and supports diverse voices.
Be well,
Amy
