WELL AWARE - Tips for Choosing Your Exercise Routine...And Sticking with It!

December 11th, 2019

Did you know the Monument Houston area plants are rolling out a new health club reimbursement benefit to help jump-start your 2020 wellness goals? (This benefit is already offered to Brandenburg employees.)

For added inspiration, we recently sat down with Jason McDuff, Customer Service Manager, a known fitness buff at the Houston site, who was happy to share some tips about finding the perfect fitness facility / activity – and sticking with it.

  1. Your fitness routine should be accessible – and fun. “Your gym should be located where you can get to it easily, either from work or home,” said Jason. “And your fitness routine should be something you enjoy. For example, I hate to run, so you’ll never find me on a treadmill. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you’re less likely to stick with it.”
  2. Tap into the fitness community. “I have found some of my fitness routines on Pinterest – there are tons! And I also talk to the people at my gym to get ideas for different exercises that I can try. I especially like talking to retired gym-goers to learn more about how they stay fit in their 70s, 80s, and beyond.”
  3. Keep it fresh. “I change up my routine every quarter. This keeps me from getting bored and challenges my body in new ways – leading to better results.”
  4. Manage your expectations. “In today’s world of instant gratification, it’s important to remember that fitness goals never happen overnight. Also, don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Set goals that are realistic for you – and tie them to your overall wellness goals, such as feeling less stressed and having more energy.”
  5. Celebrate incremental goals. “If you did one more push up today than you did last week, or lost one pants size over a few weeks, celebrate those wins. The path to your big-picture goals is paved with the ‘smaller’ accomplishments.”
