"The Helm" Operations Report: Working Better – Not Just Leaner

You’ve probably heard the phrase cost efficiency more times than you can count lately. We’re all focused on it, and we all know it matters. But if we stop at cost-cutting, we miss the bigger picture. Cost-cutting (where it makes sense) keeps us lean, but real operational efficiency goes further. It’s about the overall health of our operations and the long-term strength of our teams.

Monument Achieves Silver EcoVadis Certification: 5 Tips for Improving Operational Sustainability

One year ago, Monument’s U.S. team was celebrating a Bronze EcoVadis status, achieved with no prior experience with the process. But in addition to our “high fives” and celebrations, we also set our sights on becoming even better — in true Monument fashion.

That vision quickly became action, and this year, it also became a reality. Monument has earned a Silver Medal from EcoVadis for our U.S. sites (joining our Belgium team, who earned silver status in 2018).

Monument Teams Take a Step Back to Make Major Progress in Inventory & Expense Control

Our sites are fast-paced. Our work is deadline-driven. The momentum is always moving us forward to the next task and the next deliverable. So it’s not always easy to stop and take a step back — especially when it may mean switching gears and embracing new ways to work. But in a challenging economic climate with so much uncertainty clouding the near future, that pause is exactly the type of proactive move we need.

That was the mentality our teams across Monument sites embraced when low inventory and a soft market raised some red flags in our current spending and operations. It was time to slow down and make some tough decisions — but the efforts and challenges would all be worth it.

Kallo Team Finds Opportunity in Challenge when Alternative Catalyst Solutions Lead to New Capabilities

There’s truth behind the saying: limitation is the mother of creativity. When a process is working well, why would you change it? But when it’s confronted by unavoidable challenges, it can either be a reason to fail or an opportunity to grow. So when the Monument Kallo team faced catalyst availability issues due to supply chain constraints, they chose to get creative — not only finding an alternative, but also achieving a domino of big wins.

Dennis Gregorius Takes Us to the Cosmos in a Stunning Photo Essay from Kallo

In this stunning photo essay, Dennis Gregorius takes us into the cosmos — and around the Monument Kallo site — in a way we’ve never experienced before. As Field Coordinator at Kallo, Dennis spends most of the year sampling, servicing, and filling the site’s chemical-storage tanks. It’s work he’s been doing since 1999, initially during summers as a college student and, following graduation, as a full-time Monument employee. Dennis is an avid world traveler, primarily to South America. His most-frequent destination on that continent is Ecuador, where he’s taken approximately 12,000 photographs. We recently had the opportunity to ask him a few questions about his photo essay and his travels on Earth — and via reading and photography — to space.

Turning Crisis into Opportunity: Monument Kallo Uncovers Major Energy & Cost Reductions in Volatile Market

In times of crisis, it’s often hard to find a positive. And that could have been the case when an international conflict completely derailed the costs and accessibility of energy sources used by Monument Chemical Kallo. But instead of accepting the new reality, the Kallo team had already pro-actively chosen to seek opportunity, turning the circumstances into a chance to elevate their energy usage management and implement new initiatives to reduce their long-term impact — on every level.

Kallo Team’s Quick Thinking & Agility Helps Refuel SAF Production & Partnership

Back in 2013, the Kallo site took a major step to help the aviation industry minimize their carbon footprint. “Safety First” is The Kallo Site Motto — and It’s Made a Big Impact

It’s no surprise that our plant teams make safety their top priority. But as we all know, translating that goal into action isn’t always as easy. For our Kallo team, it’s all about teamwork fueled by repetition. And that strategy is yielding big results.

On Thursday, March 17, the Kallo team hit 1000 days without a major safety incident or lost time injury. And with 130 employees and 70 contractors working on site at any given time, the focus on safety has a large net to cast.

Commercial Success of High-Purity THF in Europe Supplies Top Pharma Customers – and Spotlights the “Monument Way”

In 2014, Monument Chemical’s site in Belgium (Kallo) began producing Tetrahydrofuran (THF) to meet growing market demand. In the beginning, the Marketing and Production teams focused on lower-volume runs for technical applications to earn some market share. But their sights were set much higher: they were intent on becoming the THF supplier to top segments in the pharma, fragrance, and electronics industries.

Jon-Paul Leduc, Monument’s Business Development Manager, Europe, shares this tale of teamwork that led to a big win for the Kallo team.
