Brandenburg Running Team Highlights the Benefits of Getting Fit Together

When it comes to exercise, there’s truth to the old adage that there is “strength in numbers.” Whether you make it to a 6AM fitness class because you’re meeting a friend or you run just a little bit faster in a 5K race to keep up with those around you, exercising with other people can be highly motivating. For more than four decades, a group of runners at the Brandenburg Kentucky site have inspired each other to stay fit – and to enjoy the beautiful running trails around the plant. “I started working at the Brandenburg site in 1980, and there were already a handful of noontime runners going strong,” said Mike Sims, who is currently retired, but remains a contractor for the site. “Today, we have a mix of folks who run every day and others who run occasionally. All are welcome!”

The Monument KY runners were happy to share the benefits of running with each other:

  • A Mental Boost – BOTH smiling and exercise release feel-good endorphins, so when you combine the social interaction of a group with a fitness activity, you can really feel great outside of just your “runner’s high.” “We rarely talk shop, so you get to know a lot about the people you work with,” said Joe Farrell, Senior Production Engineer. “We definitely have fun together.”
  • Competition – When others are grunting alongside of you, it brings out the competitive streak – to run that extra few minutes or to go a little faster.
  • A Kick in the Running Pants – Even for the most dedicated of fitness fanatics, there are days when you just don’t feel like moving. “If you miss a day of running, the others will let you know that you are a ‘slacker,’” said Mike. “Even though it’s all in good fun, there’s something to be said about keeping each other on track. Literally.”

Thinking about running – maybe even with the KY crew? Here are some tips from the current runners:

  • Follow your own pace. “We don’t all run together, but there’s still a group mentality,” said Joe. “Start out with a speed and distance that is comfortable for you.”
  • Remember WHY you’re doing it. “I have been here for 24 years and have been running most of that time,” said Jonathan Coyle, QC Lab Senior Chemist. “In my faster days, I would run a 7-mile loop at lunch – to stay in shape in case I had to go back into the military. Now, I usually just run a 3-mile loop – and I do it to stay healthy.”
  • Spread encouragement. “We keep each other motivated – rain or shine, hot or cold,” said Anping Wang, Senior R&D Chemist. “Sometimes, I give the encouragement; other days, I need it!”

Their biggest piece of advice: just do it. So, whether you want to join a local running (or walking) team, or maybe even start one of your own with family and friends, we encourage you to get together, get motivated, and get moving!
