A Memo from Bill: Coronavirus Update – Monument's Essential Products

March 25th, 2020

Monument Team,

It’s been nearly two weeks since the U.S. declared a national emergency in response to COVID-19. As states take measures daily to keep people a safe distance from each other, it’s been a crash course in changing our routines and keeping Monument running strong.

Thank you to everyone for your hard work and flexibility.

From the start, we committed to continuing our operations with additional health and safety measures in place to address the threat from coronavirus. Then, last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security designated chemical companies like ours as an “essential industry” that’s critical to the national infrastructure.

That means you play a vital role in keeping the world safe and healthy and the economy running strong. We’ve attached a sheet showing how many products and tolls we produce that contribute to a wide variety of commercial and consumer products.

A few highlights include:

  • Disinfectants, surfactants, foaming agents, pH adjusters, and binders that make cleaning and personal hygiene products effective at eliminating bacteria and viruses.
  • Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which are the central functional ingredient in both prescription and over the counter drug products, along with reagents, excipients, binders, and intermediates used in their manufacture.
  • Polymers, thermoplastics, resins, and other key ingredients necessary not only for the production of medicines and vaccines but also for medical devices, including blood and IV bags, tubing, syringes, masks, and gowns.
  • Oil, gas and diesel chemicals, jet fuel ingredients, and other fossil fuel additives crucial to the logistics, shipping, and transportation sectors.
  • Color pigments used in printing ink formulas and adhesives used for to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and sanitary, agriculture, and food products, as well as coatings, plastics, and composite materials essential to consumers.
  • Materials used in making printed circuit boards and semiconductors essential to the functioning of electronics such as medical equipment, telecommunications technologies, computers, and phones.
  • Catalysts used in the production of chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and pollution control products.

For a very close-to-home example, our isopropyl alcohol and hexylene glycol are both used in hand sanitizing and surface cleaning products. We also make components that go into manufacturing and packaging pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications.

We recognize that our custom manufacturing partners make several products that directly help fight against coronavirus. We continue to support these partners so they have an uninterrupted supply of key ingredients.

People rely on all these products and many others every day, and our customers rely on us to make their products possible. We have a role to play in everyday life as well as the world economy. What we produce makes a difference in everyone’s health, safety, comfort, and ability to get jobs done.

As a reminder:

  • Keep an eye on safety in the plants, more than ever. Don’t be distracted away from your primary role of keeping your coworkers, yourself and the community at large safe. The health and safety of our team is and will remain our top priority.
  • Continue to follow the guidelines for handwashing, social distancing, and avoiding close contact with people who may have developed COVID-19. If you develop symptoms, let your supervisor know as well as HR.
  • Be sure to visit Monument Connect for updates and information about the coronavirus.  Also available is the Monument Chemical Emergency Hotline at 855-564-2020, where we will regularly share information.

Again, I thank you sincerely for your commitment and flexibility as we navigate these challenges together.

Bill
